Swee Heng Bakery

Since I moved to Singapore in 2008, there has been a lot of adjusting to do, even until today. The difference in culture, habits, the way people talk, the way they walk, the way they eat, make friends, even the values that we hold, are different, even only slightly.

But one thing that was and still is quite the big adjustment for me and my family is the fact that we, who come from Indonesia, where Muslims are the majority, have found ourselves becoming the minority in Singapore.
This means, that when we go out to eat, there's a lot less options for us to choose from. A simple thing like one of my favorite snacks in Indonesia: Shihlin Taiwan fried chicken, does not have halal certification here. 'Errr, does that matter? It's still chicken.' Well yeah, but the chicken has to be halal (processed according to Islamic Law), then we can eat it :).

Anyways, so this means every time I see a halal eating establishment, I get all excited. Especially, when they really know what they're doing. Because sometimes, the food doesn't taste so good, which is...not ideal, and makes me sad, and wish that I could make it by myself, which then I in turn learn how to, and hopefully will share with you here in the near future.

That's why when I found out about this bakery (has been around since 1989), I'm overjoyed. Not only does it taste good, halal, have lots of selection on pastries and cakes, I also can find them in my neighborhood market and food center, very convenient.

Price wise, it's also friendly to my wallet, and this is a plus for me any time.

The outlet I visited here was the one at Yuhua Village Market and Food Center. Apparently, this is where it all started. Now, 25 years on, they have 27 outlets spread out all over Singapore.

When I went there it was already 9 pm. Actually, I was only walking past to burn the calories off after a big seafood dinner I had with friends (another halal eating establishment, hopefully I can share it here with you soon). But when I saw this, I just couldn't resist, all calories count went out the window. I tend to do this a lot with my diet, that's why I only lost 2.5 kg in 2 months. But, I'm still grateful :).

Considering it was nearing closing time, I suppose that's why they put the 'offer' sign up. 3 for 3.60, I mean....come on! Very alluring deal.

I was actually looking for my favorite item which was donut with chocolate sprinkles, but they only had the sugar glazed left, so I went with those.

I also took some cakes from the fridge, I chose tiramisu and the chocolate cake. And also mini chocolate danish they had displayed outside, just to be on the safe side.

They also sell a variety of jams: kaya, pandan, and other flavors and....their own margarine, which I'm intrigued to try. I find it very awesome that a bakery makes their own margarine. Maybe other bakeries have it too, but it was a first for me.

What makes Swee Heng special, is not because it's halal, but because the bread they make is so soft, chewy, fragrant and taste so light. Which I love and hate at the same time, because it messes up with my diet. And I can never resist the temptation to just take another bite or get second (or third) helping. It's a blessing and a curse that the bakery is right within my neighborhood.

Just look, appearance wise, the donut does not look like much, very homely. It's sort of similar to the one my grandma used to make, the difference being; that other one had the same consistency as that of a bagel, weird. Too chewy, doughy, a bit tough on your teeth. I can only imagine how my grandpa coped since he didn't have any tooth in his old age. Can you imagine sugar glazed bagel??
I do miss my grandmother, very much, but not the donut looking bagel.

What about the cake?

I had the tiramisu that night. I thought, I'll just have 1 small bite and leave the rest for my husband to finish. Besides, it was his favorite cake.

But in the end, this is how much I ate before I reminded myself that I've had enough, so I put the spoon down and gave myself a mental kick on the behind. Haaa...self control is hard.

The cake in between the layers were soft, very light, and had the right sweetness. It disappears in your mouth, and you only had traces of the cake left once you move your tongue about, just to remind you that the cake was there. Very good.
The mascarpone cheese layer itself is very fragrant, only a hint of sweetness so it didn't make me feel too overwhelmed as tiramisu often does. Over all, it was a good cake. If I'm not concerned about diabetes, I can eat this more regularly.

Sambal Goreng Ati Ampela (Spicy Chicken Liver and Gizzards)

Boy, the sound of this dish sure is extreme when you translate it into English. Reminds me of Halloween somehow. But hearing it in Bahasa delivers a calming sensation to my nerves. ' Sambal goreng ati ampela ', I associate this with deliciousness, bursts of flavor, and family :D. But, still, basically this dish really is chicken liver and gizzards cooked in chili, and if you're not used to this type of eating, then this is extreme for you, while it's like candy to me :P. Indonesia has many varieties of sambal goreng , every region has their own take on it, this is only one of them. This is the sambal goreng I grew up with, even though nowadays my mother has altered her recipe, but this is the flavors that I recognize and will soon share with you (complete recipe in the bottom of this post). What I've done here is I've cleaned and cut up to bite size pieces all the liver, gizzards and hearts. I should have showed you how it is done, but I forgot to...

Gulai Kambing - Mutton Curry (My Mother in Law's Recipe, so you know it's gonna be good)

I am so passionate about this recipe, because it tastes so good, and the gravy is very very rich! The first time my mother in law taught me how to make this (it has been a special dish in her family for a long time now), I knew I was learning something special. And I was right. This recipe now has been a favorite among my family and friends. A memorable reaction from a colleague was when I saw her quietly eating the curry by herself, and I saw her opening and closing her eyes in response to the burst of flavors from the curry :D. She then shook her head (in amazement.....I hope).  I know that sounds exaggerated, but it was truly what happened! I mean, I cannot blame her.... If this does not look beautiful to you, I don't know what it is. Surprisingly, the recipe for making this is not at all complicated, but it is troublesome. The total cooking time for me was about 4 hours, to cook all the meat until it's tender, and the gravy to become like that :). But let me tell ...
