Fish & Co

Who doesn't know Fish n Co? It's one of the most well known family chain restaurants that serves mainly seafood, and has opened up its franchise in countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Mauritius, Bangladesh, etc. It also happens to be one of my favorite seafood restaurant in Singapore.

The first time I even considered Fish n Co as a family favorite is when we tried their food here in Singapore. When I first went to Fish n Co in Indonesia many years ago, I didn't remember being this impressed. Apparently, the same goes to all my family members in Indonesia as well. Somehow the Indonesian franchise does not have such an extensive and interesting menu as its Singapore counterparts. That, or they just don't know how to cook it better in Indonesia (which I don't say very often, if ever). In short, Indonesian Fish n Co is not my go to seafood restaurant whenever I go back to visit.

So last weekend, my family and I went to Jurong Point Shopping Center after a day of playing at Jurong Safra. Well, my daughter played the Kidz Amaze, but my husband and I used that rare quality time to say how weird each of us are, and how much we are suited for each other (hahahaha did you gag? It's okay, I do too sometimes).

Initially, we went to Jurong Point to eat at this Indonesian place that serves soft bone chicken. 'Soft bone? Like soft shell crab?', yes, something like that. The chicken bones are so tender, it crumbles in your mouth. Literally. The ad even says 'no teeth required'. Or was it 'teeth are optional'? Whichever, very interesting experience. Even though it's supposedly from Indonesia, I'm still not used to eating it, and still freaks me out somehow. But, that's the appeal :) (this is where most people would comment on how abnormal I am).
But then, my daughter requested that we eat at Fish n Co which also happens to be there at the shopping center. Oh well, lets go.

This outlet at Jurong Point is newly renovated. The place has become more modern, seats more people, and fully air conditioned. This is the queue at 7.39 pm on a Sunday.

As soon as we were seated, the waitress handed us an iPad, which has the complete menu in it and all we had to do was just click on the pictures of the food we want to order, and the order will go straight to their system. Convenient.

This is how it looks like on the inside, slightly squeezed, but still okay. They had small Halloween decorations put up.

Not too long after we click in our orders, the food came. This is what I ordered that night, which is always my go to whenever I don't feel like eating too much (what?), grilled white fish with ebiko. Yummm.

I really like this one because the fish is grilled, so it feels like I'm eating something healthy (at first), then they put mozzarella cheese on top.....with ebiko (prawn eggs)!!! My mind always goes wild, so is the saliva in my mouth.

The first bite, is always magical, it reminds my palate and my brain, that fish can taste this good. Because personally, I'm not a big fan of fish. Chicken on the other hand, now that's God's blessing to the world.

Look at that roe, insane right?
Now let me let you in on some useful tips: some outlets are more generous than others in slathering this roe sauce on top. The last outlet I visited that was very generous was the one in Vivo City (please take note :P).

The white fish I ordered came with a side of mashed potatoes and coleslaw, but who wants to talk about those? It's all about the fish!
But I have to make an honorary mention to the mashed potatoes, they were very smooth, and creamy. So creamy, I felt like I have to go hiking right after I eat it, to burn off the calories. I always try not to polish the whole thing off, well, it doesn't work every single time. But, when it does, I feel proud of myself.

That night, I also ordered the swordfish collar bone. It was deep fried with their special batter, and then sprinkled with some salt. It came with a dipping sauce, a spicy mango sauce with cilantro. You can never go wrong with cilantro.

I thought the collar bone was mostly bone, but it had quite a lot of meat in it. And I could taste that the fish had been marinated, because the meat inside was very flavorful. What was it, turmeric? It reminds me a lot with turmeric, but probably they didn't even use that spice, who knows.

I shared the collar bone with my husband, and it was quite a task for us to finish it. But, being us, of course we did. Wait, I meant, 'being me'.

You can imagine how meaty it was before right?

It was a good dinner, thanks to my daughter, though my first choice was also excellent, but we can go visit that other place next time.

Words cannot describe properly how good that fish was, I suspect it's because I don't have huge vocabularies, but I hope this will give you an idea. Fish that good, deserves a zen moment.

Sambal Goreng Ati Ampela (Spicy Chicken Liver and Gizzards)

Boy, the sound of this dish sure is extreme when you translate it into English. Reminds me of Halloween somehow. But hearing it in Bahasa delivers a calming sensation to my nerves. ' Sambal goreng ati ampela ', I associate this with deliciousness, bursts of flavor, and family :D. But, still, basically this dish really is chicken liver and gizzards cooked in chili, and if you're not used to this type of eating, then this is extreme for you, while it's like candy to me :P. Indonesia has many varieties of sambal goreng , every region has their own take on it, this is only one of them. This is the sambal goreng I grew up with, even though nowadays my mother has altered her recipe, but this is the flavors that I recognize and will soon share with you (complete recipe in the bottom of this post). What I've done here is I've cleaned and cut up to bite size pieces all the liver, gizzards and hearts. I should have showed you how it is done, but I forgot to...

Swee Heng Bakery

Since I moved to Singapore in 2008, there has been a lot of adjusting to do, even until today. The difference in culture, habits, the way people talk, the way they walk, the way they eat, make friends, even the values that we hold, are different, even only slightly. But one thing that was and still is quite the big adjustment for me and my family is the fact that we, who come from Indonesia, where Muslims are the majority, have found ourselves becoming the minority in Singapore. This means, that when we go out to eat, there's a lot less options for us to choose from. A simple thing like one of my favorite snacks in Indonesia: Shihlin Taiwan fried chicken, does not have halal certification here. 'Errr, does that matter? It's still chicken.' Well yeah, but the chicken has to be halal (processed according to Islamic Law), then we can eat it :). Anyways, so this means every time I see a halal eating establishment, I get all excited. Especially, when they really know w...

Gulai Kambing - Mutton Curry (My Mother in Law's Recipe, so you know it's gonna be good)

I am so passionate about this recipe, because it tastes so good, and the gravy is very very rich! The first time my mother in law taught me how to make this (it has been a special dish in her family for a long time now), I knew I was learning something special. And I was right. This recipe now has been a favorite among my family and friends. A memorable reaction from a colleague was when I saw her quietly eating the curry by herself, and I saw her opening and closing her eyes in response to the burst of flavors from the curry :D. She then shook her head (in amazement.....I hope).  I know that sounds exaggerated, but it was truly what happened! I mean, I cannot blame her.... If this does not look beautiful to you, I don't know what it is. Surprisingly, the recipe for making this is not at all complicated, but it is troublesome. The total cooking time for me was about 4 hours, to cook all the meat until it's tender, and the gravy to become like that :). But let me tell ...
