This is one of my and my husband's favorite restaurant in Singapore. I personally know that he loves it for the Chongqing chicken.
The first time my husband ever cared for chong qing cuisine is when he first tried the Si Chuan hot pot when he went to China. Luckily, his colleagues there introduced him to this halal hot pot place (I have yet to try this place), and ever since he dipped that piece of lamb into their special chili and si chuan pepper infused broth and next, to their smooth, savory, mind blowing sesame paste, he was hooked. Now, he'll eat anything with si chuan pepper in it, including si chuan pepper peanuts.
Well, he won't exactly eat the si chuan pepper itself, but he loves the aroma. Very appealing, and I can understand this.
And so, the other day, we decided to pay Streats Hong Kong Cafe a visit. It has been a while, and by a while, usually we mean 2 weeks max. We visited their newly renovated outlet in IMM.
The new place seems whimsical to me, I'm not quite sure how to react. It's nice, cozy, but I don't really understand the concept. Some areas remind me of a bird cage, another they put up bicycles as a 'fence', but anyway, I come for the food.
The meat they use for this soup is the beef brisket. And when you get that cut where there's still some fat clinging on to it, there are no words, simply stunning. The meat is so tender, succulent, and has soaked in all the wonderful aroma and taste of the spices in the broth. Beautiful.
Even so, the broth is not fatty, it tastes quite clean, so you don't feel too fat afterwards. But you'll still need your exercise.
The noodle that they use is the thick round rice noodle. Not chewy like udon, and it tastes plain by itself, but it can withstand that broth. Those two are the perfect combination, the strong flavor of the broth clinked to the noodle in a way that when I slurp the noodle in, it hits the right spot for me. I'd never imagine there'd be a day where I praise a plain rice noodle so much, more than the things I'd say to praise kway teow (the chinese flat noodles) which is my all time favorite comfort food.
During my last visit, I also ordered a new snack from their menu, the salted egg yolk bun. But, I should've waited until they've become a popular item. I was quite disappointed with that one.
I mean, look!
Isn't this unfortunate? The taste is lovely, but I don't order salted egg yolk bun just for the taste. I want the liquid custard to melt, to ooze out of the bun as my teeth bite into it, to run down the side of my mouth and onto my hand and just make a mess of everything. Don't you think so too?
But it's okay, this is still our favorite restaurant, and it still makes me fall in love every time I order the HK stewed beef noodle.
And so, I'll leave you with this. So that we end this post, with nothing but good, wonderful memories.

As usual, I ordered the HK Stewed Beef Noodles. I'm in love with this one ever since I first tried it some time ago. What draws me to this dish is because it's a soup dish and it looks spicy, I love spicy food. This one looks like the broth is covered in chili, and I can already imagine the aroma of the soup, filled with spices, makes your nose cleared up at once. And I was right, and since then this has been my favorite every time I come here.
I mean I would look at the menu, and I would pretend to choose what to eat, but I always order the same thing!
Does this make you smile or what? You know those moments when you know you're about to eat something special? I had that moment then, and I have been having it since, every time I order this bowl of goodness.
The broth doesn't disappoint; savory, slightly sweet, spicy to the point it choked me a little, but in a good way. Just don't try to talk when you're eating this, you need full concentration to swallow and make sure the spicy fume don't get into your nose through your throat :D. Sounds extreme, but it's delicious, and worth every effort.
