Asparagus and garlic...Fail!

This post marks my online journey with food. It's the first entry on this blog, and already it's a failure. Not good.

I have been a fan of food, since forever, like I'm sure most people do....I think. My favorite past time would be browsing menus-even right after I ate from the restaurant next door- or browsing the super market though I don't have anything I necessarily need to buy at the moment. I'm just fascinated by everything about food. Especially if I find new kinds of food which people on the other side of the world would normally eat. It gets me excited!

Anyways, I'm starting this blog as a journal for myself, and perhaps my family, to talk about recipes which I have learned, or invented throughout the years, so I'd always have a way to file them somehow...neatly. Some time ago I tried doing so by writing them down in a note book, you know, grandma style, but I ended up wrinkling all the pages because of the many changes (especially on measurements) I had to make. So, I thought, hey, why not write them down in a blog? It'll be there forever (I hope). My daughter would always have a way to look back on all of my recipes, at least that's the plan.

Now, for my first recipe, this is not really a recipe I'd try again I think, more like an experiment working with asparagus, which I have never done before. And it turns out, it was a failure. The asparagus didn't taste as good as I thought. But, I write it down anyway, because I think learning from others' failures is important, including in cooking :). Everyone has their bad days sometimes, even the best of cooks, so have confidence!

On to the asparagus shall we. The other day I found this gorgeous asparagus. Truth be told, I have no idea. I just thought they were awesome because they looked so big. I mean look!

Beautiful no?
I tried to research on a asian or chinese style way of cooking these. Why? Because all the western ones involve matching asparagus with cheese. Now, I'm on a diet, I tend to stay away from dairy products, well not all, but cheese is something I'd rather avoid today, because I just had some yesterday, on my wonderful spaghetti :).
Moving on. I decided then to just wing my way through this. 'Why not saute them with garlic?' I thought.

Nice and fragrant. Then I thought: butter!!! (what about my diet? At this point, I have forgotten about it).
So I heated up some butter together with the garlic. Oooohh, it's getting good. Don't you think?

It's a good idea so far, so once it was starting to smell aromatic in my tiny kitchen, I tossed in my asparagus.

Then I add salt and pepper, I just eyeballed it, not to sure how much I put in, whatever, the recipe's a fail anyway.

So far I still thought it was going towards the right direction but then I thought 'Hmmm...this is looking dry. How are the asparagus going to cook through?'.

So I dunked in some water.

Now, at this point, I was thinking, 'Haaa, I should've just used the oven. Sauteing is not a really good idea.'
But I had to fix it somehow, it was my lunch! At least make it somewhat edible.

So I added in my go to mushroom bouillon. So far, every dish I made using this tastes magical. No, it's not that kind of mushroom. But the dishes always came out great, though I only used simple ingredients.

However, I needed another guarantee that I won't gag eating this, so I added another magic touch.

Cheese spread! Where did that diet go? I think it took a rain check for the day. I think I was in panic mode. Whatever, I had to eat. If cheese spread will make it bearable, so be it.

Tadaaa......

Well to tell you the truth, the places where the asparagus touched the garlic tasted amazing. But everywhere else was...meh. I finished everything except 1 stalk, but I thought I had enough cheese spread.

Lesson of the day: I'll try using more garlic, and cook it in the oven next time. I think that one will taste great. But we shall see....

Friends, I'd really appreciate your thoughts and input on this, like where I went wrong (though it was quite obvious), but I just need to hear it from others. So kindly take the time to comment on this post. Thank youu!

Sambal Goreng Ati Ampela (Spicy Chicken Liver and Gizzards)

Boy, the sound of this dish sure is extreme when you translate it into English. Reminds me of Halloween somehow. But hearing it in Bahasa delivers a calming sensation to my nerves. ' Sambal goreng ati ampela ', I associate this with deliciousness, bursts of flavor, and family :D. But, still, basically this dish really is chicken liver and gizzards cooked in chili, and if you're not used to this type of eating, then this is extreme for you, while it's like candy to me :P. Indonesia has many varieties of sambal goreng , every region has their own take on it, this is only one of them. This is the sambal goreng I grew up with, even though nowadays my mother has altered her recipe, but this is the flavors that I recognize and will soon share with you (complete recipe in the bottom of this post). What I've done here is I've cleaned and cut up to bite size pieces all the liver, gizzards and hearts. I should have showed you how it is done, but I forgot to

Swee Heng Bakery

Since I moved to Singapore in 2008, there has been a lot of adjusting to do, even until today. The difference in culture, habits, the way people talk, the way they walk, the way they eat, make friends, even the values that we hold, are different, even only slightly. But one thing that was and still is quite the big adjustment for me and my family is the fact that we, who come from Indonesia, where Muslims are the majority, have found ourselves becoming the minority in Singapore. This means, that when we go out to eat, there's a lot less options for us to choose from. A simple thing like one of my favorite snacks in Indonesia: Shihlin Taiwan fried chicken, does not have halal certification here. 'Errr, does that matter? It's still chicken.' Well yeah, but the chicken has to be halal (processed according to Islamic Law), then we can eat it :). Anyways, so this means every time I see a halal eating establishment, I get all excited. Especially, when they really know w

Gulai Kambing - Mutton Curry (My Mother in Law's Recipe, so you know it's gonna be good)

I am so passionate about this recipe, because it tastes so good, and the gravy is very very rich! The first time my mother in law taught me how to make this (it has been a special dish in her family for a long time now), I knew I was learning something special. And I was right. This recipe now has been a favorite among my family and friends. A memorable reaction from a colleague was when I saw her quietly eating the curry by herself, and I saw her opening and closing her eyes in response to the burst of flavors from the curry :D. She then shook her head (in amazement.....I hope).  I know that sounds exaggerated, but it was truly what happened! I mean, I cannot blame her.... If this does not look beautiful to you, I don't know what it is. Surprisingly, the recipe for making this is not at all complicated, but it is troublesome. The total cooking time for me was about 4 hours, to cook all the meat until it's tender, and the gravy to become like that :). But let me tell
