Bali Trip - The Ubud Village Resort and Spa

This trip to Bali, we had a chance to get ourselves checked in into two hotels (we just realized on this trip that we love hotel hopping! I think we'll do it again next time). The Ubud Village Resort and Spa is a 5-star boutique resort designed for total relaxation, that has won the Bali Tourism Award for 2015 - 2016, World Luxury Hotel Awards for 2014, Asia's Best Romantic Boutique Hotel Awards for 2014, achieved the certificate of excellence from Tripadvisor in 2015, and a bunch of other awards that basically says that this hotel rocks, romantic to the max, and so this is THE reason why I chose to book this hotel for the remaining part of our Bali vacation.

The front lobby
One of the reasons why I love coming to Bali so much is because this place has many boutique hotels with private pool villas! I get to swim in private with my family in normal swimming suits instead of the covered ones :).
And they usually provide top notch service, guaranteeing maximum relaxation and enjoyment for their guests. I always come out of these hotels feeling refreshed, happy, stress free and ready to eat another day.

I have read rave reviews about The Ubud Village and cannot wait to experience the luxury myself.

When we arrived at the lobby, we were immediately greeted by the hotel staff who tended to our luggage. Another staff courteously showed me the way to the lobby sofa, and presented us with nice, ice cold welcome drinks, a nice guava soda and prepared the check in process for us. It was very swift and easy.

Soon after that, well after we were done taking wefie in the lobby, we were brought to our villa. I had a glimpse of part of the property, it felt like a little village (like the name), with little alley ways, 'natural' plants every where. A peaceful walk.

The villa we were staying in was not too far of a walk from the lobby, so that was nice. But I saw at the lobby area they also had golf carts, I assume would be used to escort guests to villas that are located quite a distance from the lobby.

I was happy to see my name at the front of the villa, made me feel like I'm home. Unfortunately, the light bulb next to it was broken and they seem to have forgotten to change it even though I have reminded them. So it was quite dark at night when we enter the villa.

The size of our villa was 284 sqm, very spacious. However, I did not expect the private pool to be that small. We've enjoyed another resort with the villa size smaller than this but with a much bigger pool. Nevertheless, it was still a beautiful villa, and we understood the appeal immediately.

The staff was kind enough to give us a tour of the villa, of where things are, the amenities provided, how to request for anything, even information on attractions near the hotel, which was nice. Some of the amenities we were provided with were: out door and indoor slippers, bathrobes, towels by the pool and right by the indoor shower, fresh fruit, in-room safe, shopping bag to shop for souvenirs, toiletries including the bubble bath gel, hair dryer, bug spray, DVD (upon request), ironing board and iron (upon request), and everything else to make sure we had an enjoyable and comfortable stay.
They also provided us with wifi, but the connection was testing both my and my husband's patience. This is a game I loose constantly. Good thing no gadget were thrown anywhere :D. I guess I was just too relaxed to even care too much.

The fresh fruit in our room
I have to comment on the layout of the villa though, which I find odd and impractical. When we first entered the villa, we entered through the garden, by the end of that was the pool and the bale bengong or the out door lounging area, which was continued by another small garden and a fish pond.
The villa also had an outdoor shower, but this was not connected to the pool, you had to go to the inside of the villa (the front side being the bedroom), then through a side door to the shower mentioned. So, when my daughter planned to take a shower right after her dip in the pool, there were many water puddles inside the bed room which she left behind, and this drives me crazy. We have seen villas with better layouts.

The indoor shower is also separated from the toilet. Well, this is not a big deal to us and proved to be convenient too when one of us wanted to take a shower and another wanted to just use the toilet, but I guess we're just used to things being in one place :).

The outdoor bath tub is surrounded by the fish pond, it was very romantic and I guess some would find it as a must try experience. But me and my husband have had that experience before, so this time it was my daughter's turn to enjoy. She just loved the bubble bath she had there :D.
Romantic time alone is reserved for our next honey moon, whenever that is.

You can see what the bath tub looks like in the video I made below. Somehow, I forgot to take a picture of it.

One of my most favorite thing to do here, other than taking a swim with my daughter (the center of the pool was about 130 cm deep, so watch your young children closely), is to just enjoy the garden while lying down on the reclining beds outside. That felt really nice, the nice warm sun, the cool shade provided by the Kamboja tree, the soft sound of the water swirling in the pool, the occasional sounds of birds and other creatures.

Perfect!

Oh, but I also have to mention an unnerving experience here that kept my husband on edge throughout the whole stay, which was our little encounter with nature. A total of three little frogs were found in our bedroom. Good thing the hotel staff was on stand by 24 hours, so when we saw the third one (we found the first two earlier in the evening) at about midnight, the situation was immediately put under control. I took this opportunity to make mention to my husband that perhaps the frogs were a part of a big frog family, and since we had kidnapped three of their relatives, a big search group is on its way to find them *evil smile. I wondered how he slept that night, I slept like a baby.

They were actually cute, scared little froggies, but we couldn't have them jumping around in the bed room when we were sleeping. The staffs promised not to hurt them though, so that was a relief.

No other frog incident occurred other than the one on that first night. Nevertheless, because of that, my husband insisted that we stay away from villas like this in the future for a while, which is too bad for me, because I love it still, despite of our experience.

The breakfast buffet here was pretty unique. Instead of having the food spread out in the open, they only provided us with a complete breakfast menu from which we can order anything. The hotel staff will then deliver it from the kitchen straight to our table, fresh.

Kolak pisang
This is kolak pisang which is banana cooked in coconut oil and palm sugar. Pretty good. It is actually a type of dessert, but we Indonesians like to have it anytime of the day, and breakfasts is not an exception. We love to eat big hearty breakfast, it's more of a habit than a necessity.

This is the view accompanying our breakfast in the morning, fantastic right? It's like a painting. I just love it. It was an awesome stay for me.

Anyways, my post feels incomplete without saying something about what I ate that day. Near the hotel, we found this quaint, little halal eatery that sells typical Indonesian food. The place is called Warung Ijo, I've included the information at the end of this post.

I felt lucky to have found this place. The food is delicious, and the price is affordable!

Gado-gado
Gado-gado or Indonesian salad with peanut sauce is the star of the night. It has been a while since I had authentic Indonesian gado-gado. More over, one that tasted this good. My husband was the one who ordered this and I envied him slightly because he made a good choice.

I also made a good choice that night; cap cay, stir fried vegetables with chicken. It tasted smokey, flavorful and the vegetables were crisp. Superb. I was not hungry and thought I'd just snack a little, but I ended up finishing this whole plate by myself, plus a few bites of the gado-gado from my husband's plate. Greedy are we?

I also had soda gembira (literally means happy soda), which is soda mixed with condensed milk and cocoa pandan syrup, my childhood favorite. It was truly a remarkable night :D. My tummy was full, and I was happy due to the sugar rush. It was my kind of vacation indeed.

The payment system in this little cafe is very unique, the first I've seen ever. So when you ordered your choice of meal to the waiter/waitress, you will be handed small coupons. After you're done eating and ready to pay for your food, you bring all of the coupons to the cashier who will then ring it up for you. Easy.

As usual, I made a video to share with you, I hope you find it both enjoyable and informative. If you feel like something is missing, please feel free to leave a comment below and let me know :).

Sambal Goreng Ati Ampela (Spicy Chicken Liver and Gizzards)

Boy, the sound of this dish sure is extreme when you translate it into English. Reminds me of Halloween somehow. But hearing it in Bahasa delivers a calming sensation to my nerves. ' Sambal goreng ati ampela ', I associate this with deliciousness, bursts of flavor, and family :D. But, still, basically this dish really is chicken liver and gizzards cooked in chili, and if you're not used to this type of eating, then this is extreme for you, while it's like candy to me :P. Indonesia has many varieties of sambal goreng , every region has their own take on it, this is only one of them. This is the sambal goreng I grew up with, even though nowadays my mother has altered her recipe, but this is the flavors that I recognize and will soon share with you (complete recipe in the bottom of this post). What I've done here is I've cleaned and cut up to bite size pieces all the liver, gizzards and hearts. I should have showed you how it is done, but I forgot to

Swee Heng Bakery

Since I moved to Singapore in 2008, there has been a lot of adjusting to do, even until today. The difference in culture, habits, the way people talk, the way they walk, the way they eat, make friends, even the values that we hold, are different, even only slightly. But one thing that was and still is quite the big adjustment for me and my family is the fact that we, who come from Indonesia, where Muslims are the majority, have found ourselves becoming the minority in Singapore. This means, that when we go out to eat, there's a lot less options for us to choose from. A simple thing like one of my favorite snacks in Indonesia: Shihlin Taiwan fried chicken, does not have halal certification here. 'Errr, does that matter? It's still chicken.' Well yeah, but the chicken has to be halal (processed according to Islamic Law), then we can eat it :). Anyways, so this means every time I see a halal eating establishment, I get all excited. Especially, when they really know w

Gulai Kambing - Mutton Curry (My Mother in Law's Recipe, so you know it's gonna be good)

I am so passionate about this recipe, because it tastes so good, and the gravy is very very rich! The first time my mother in law taught me how to make this (it has been a special dish in her family for a long time now), I knew I was learning something special. And I was right. This recipe now has been a favorite among my family and friends. A memorable reaction from a colleague was when I saw her quietly eating the curry by herself, and I saw her opening and closing her eyes in response to the burst of flavors from the curry :D. She then shook her head (in amazement.....I hope).  I know that sounds exaggerated, but it was truly what happened! I mean, I cannot blame her.... If this does not look beautiful to you, I don't know what it is. Surprisingly, the recipe for making this is not at all complicated, but it is troublesome. The total cooking time for me was about 4 hours, to cook all the meat until it's tender, and the gravy to become like that :). But let me tell
