Char Kuay Teow - Delicious Malaysian Staple in Singapore at Papparich

A nice relaxing Sunday. The weather was cool, the air was clear. My family was looking for something quick and easy to eat before we hang out somewhere to have some needed quality time over coffee. We're quite fed up with the usual fast food joints, though truth be told I wouldn't mind having another KFC this week :). Living in the Jurong area, naturally we are drawn towards Jurong East and its trifecta of malls as a source of entertainment; JEM, Westgate and JCube. They even provide shuttle buses from Westgate to IMM (another mall nearby which offers more variety in terms of halal eateries). If you don't care for buses, there is even a connecting bridge from Westgate to IMM! We have been making lesser and lesser trips to town due to this convenience. For this particular Sunday though, we decided to pay a quick visit to Westgate! As usual, it's crowded, but I always like the vibe there, but maybe it's because I often go there to eat. Anticipation of food real...

The Dewi Jumbo Prawns - My Momma's Recipe

This recipe was first thought of by my mother. It is simple, delicious, and you can cook anything with these ingredients, I kid you not. In my opinion, my mom is truly gifted in cooking, that's where her talent lies. However, her true calling is..........cleaning -_-. Her friends and family, and everyone else who knows her can tell without a doubt she definitely has OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), although it was never officially assessed by any health practitioner, but her situation is really obvious, clear cut, in your face, double confirm, guarantee chop case. To give you an idea of what my mom is like, let me tell you a little bit about her, one of the most important and beloved person in my life, and by far, the most interesting individual I have ever known, bar none. She loves cleaning. Well 'love' is a strong word, 'she is enslaved by her obsession to clean' is probably more accurate. You wouldn't know the true meaning of the word 'imma...

Giant Barbecued Ribs - Meat Fest at Badoque Cafe

I have heard of this place, read about it several times here and there, and it always receives rave reviews. But, weirdly enough, I never wanted to go there (maybe because it was so darn far), until recently. My husband and I are both red meat lovers, but in Singapore, we don't really have a go to place to satisfy our meat cravings. Well, we had a favorite before, which was Fika, when they still had the Fika Plank Special, grilled ribs the size of my face (even bigger, if you can believe it!). But, on the last several visits we made, it seems that they no longer have this special on their menu, which is sad news for us (to this my husband would say 'There's just news. There is no good or bad,' quoting Oogway from Kung Fu Panda, to which I looked at him in disdain). And so, we don't have a so called favorite 'meat' place to go to anymore*depressed. Reading the reviews on Badoque Cafe, not to mention looking at their marvelous ribs and steaks pictures, I...

Singapore Fish Head Curry - West C'oz Cafe

I may have said I'm not really into fish, but, sometimes when you come across something amazing, you know you just have to make an exception, ......or excuse. I'm not much of a fish eater, but I have always been passionate about the head. There's just something about eating the collagen filled skin, and cheek, and....eye balls, that gets me all excited and...hungry, even when I am really not. In Indonesia, there are several restaurants that serve this delicate fare, that have become my personal favorite. But, in Singapore, West C'oz Cafe is the only place I'd look for fish head curry. A bit different from Indonesian style fish head curry-where the fish head is served by itself, making you feel like you're going to eat something very special- in Singapore, fish head curry is served together with deep fried tofu, fried tofu skin, eggplant, okra, cabbage and sometimes carrots. I welcome the change since those are all my favorite things to eat (what I don...

Bandeng Tauco (Milk Fish Fried with Preserved Soybeans)

Ever since I first made this dish, it has been my husband's favorite. He said, he never had anything like this before. Which is weird for me, because I grew up eating this almost on a daily basis, it's the family's favorite too. My grandmother made this for her family, and then my mother makes it for hers, and now I make this for mine. It's a simple recipe, but quite a challenge to make, I will tell you why. Milk fish I'm not a big fan of fish. Well, apparently as a child, I was, but then I ate too much of it, and grew sick with it in the end. But, out of all the fish in the fish world, my favorite has got to be the milk fish. It's a lot of work to eat it, because of the many many bones you have to go through, especially on their tails (the most delicious part I have to say), but they're very flavorful. It almost tastes like they have MSG in their meat. Yummy. Clever fish, they know how to self produce MSG, but not so clever as to end up on my pl...

Hjh Maimunah Restaurant - Malay Food Fare (?)

I finally had the chance to visit this place, after knowing about it when I went to The Lab SG  (my experience the other day). Jalan Pisang has a lot of nice eateries, I'm so happy. That day when I first saw this establishment, as well as the day when I was finally able to eat there, this place was the same: super crowded. It's amazing to see that many people queue-ing outside, snaking around the corner of the street, especially when that tiny street has at least three other halal restaurants. So, I knew it had to be good. It doesn't show you the queue here, but it was long (it was on the right side) I went all the way to Bugis, from Bukit Batok, for a plate of mixed rice, it better be good. Before my visit, I asked a friend of mine, who also happens to be an Indonesian, and has had the chance to eat there (regularly) since her office is nearby, for an opinion. She said it sells good food, very much to her liking, but that it doesn't taste like your typical Ma...
